For Drummers who desire quality recordings at home this unit is a wonderful choice. You can enjoy the classic 4 Microphone recording set-up using stereo overheads, kick and snare. If you want more control using individual tom mics than the the MOTU 8Pre would be a better choice.
Simplicity is the key with the MOTU 4Pre. Just plug your mics into the superb sounding preamps and your favorite recording software will take care of the rest. If you are a Mac user MOTU's Audiodesk has all the functionalty that most drum studios would ever need, and is included free. Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, and other workstations are supported.
The features built into this 8.5" wide half rack size unit are impressive. It has combo microphone preamps and guitar inputs with individually adjustable 48V phantom power and -20 dB pads. The preamps have 60 dB of analog adjustable gain using the front-panel trims. Mic inputs can be operated individually or in stereo pairs. Two of those inputs can double as regular line level inputs, and two can be used for guitar use. If more mic preamps are needed in the future another 4pre could be connected and used simultaneously.
Hi-Z guitar inputs deliver true guitar sound to keep your guitarists smiling. Stereo line inputs for a keyboard or other line input gear have a -10 dB or +4 dB reference level input. Two headphone jacks with independent volume is ideal for two musicians working together or for one musician and the engineer.
There are two sets of analog outputs for maximum flexibility. Main outs are perfect for powered studio monitors and separate line outs act as a completely independent output pair. Digital S/PDIF input and output simplify stereo digital transfers, with optional external clocking and support for sample rates up to 96 kHz. The 4Pre can easily handle most drum studio related activities with its comprehensive features combined with AudioDesk for Mac users or your preferred recording software.
