The important fundamentals of sight reading, rudiments, drum beats (patterns), fills, and listening skills are covered in a fun and upbeat manner. The only real way any drummer can become proficient is hands on experience playing along with recorded music. This is an important part of the lessons.

Listening to and learning drum parts of great drummers goes a long way in the progress of any student. The value of a positive attitude and a belief in their own ability is emphasized. Practice assignments for each lesson are designed to be motivational and fun.

Drum lessons need to be an activity that the student eagerly anticipates or enthusiasm is quickly lost. Each student is encouraged to suggest some of their favorite music as part of the overall mix. This keeps the sessions more interesting and focused on them.

The Drum Set Musician, a superb book designed for beginning to intermediate level drummers is used. It includes complete drum charts and a play along CD minus drums. Additional hand written music for each student's individual situation is also included when needed.

Learning to play drums can be exciting when the drum teacher knows how to communicate and keep the vibe relaxed and friendly at all times. Learning an instrument should not feel like going to "boot camp". My goal is for my students to be remember their music lessons as a wonderful experience.
